The Medical Association (OM) announced this Wednesday the creation of new specialties of aesthetic and cosmetic medicine and competence in aesthetic medicine to overcome the lack of regulation in this developing field.
The MM statement said the new schools now established will set technical, scientific and educational criteria to address the lack of regulation.
“Aesthetic and cosmetic medicine has undergone significant changes, and with the emergence of several non-medical practitioners, it was important for the Medical Association to act and define clear scientific, technical and educational criteria that protect doctors practicing in this field and, above all, people who benefit from these services,” President Carlos Cortes said in a note.
The same leader believes that the creation of these new specialties in OM “is another important step towards the completion of a long-awaited process in an area that requires regular regulation for the sake of the quality of medicine and clinical practice.” and people’s safety.”
OM emphasizes that in recent years several specialists have emerged indiscriminately practicing medical methods in the field of aesthetic and cosmetic medicine, and that, on the other hand, “this is a field of medicine with invasive methods and possible serious complications, which is practiced without differentiated and specific scientific technical training for this purpose.”
“Thus, to overcome the lack of regulation and establish criteria for technical and scientific training in the field of aesthetic medicine, the specialties of aesthetic and cosmetic medicine will be created as a subspecialty of the specialty of plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and the specialty of dermatovenereology and the competence of aesthetic medicine,” says O.M.
Establishment commissions, which include specialists appointed by specialized colleges, will ensure the awarding of new degrees until the creation of a new college and new specialized sections, he concludes.
