The platform of PSP trade unions and GNR associations insisted that the government would still be able to make decisions regarding police additions and assured that protests would continue.
“Expand it [revisão dos suplementos] for the future government it is to shake off the waters,” said Bruno Pereira, who spoke on behalf of the platform and is also president of the National Union of Police (SNOP).
The platform, made up of seven public security police unions and four Republican National Guard associations, responded to statements by the President’s minister, who at a press conference after a meeting of the Council of Ministers said that police demands for higher wages will have to wait for the next government, since the current government is in power and lacks the legitimacy to initiate trade union negotiations.
Bruno Pereira said the statements “will only further exacerbate and inflame the police officers’ feelings of sadness and fatigue.”
The president of the union representing PSP commanders and directors believes the government still has the ability to review security force additions by challenging the positions of constitutionalists and the Constitutional Court.
“There is a difference. It is true that this is not the usual or normal difference between the current leadership, but the one who cannot do this is the Assembly of the Republic since it is dissolved, now the government, even in the field of governance they can do this. Here,” he said, noting that the current government “does not want to do anything and take on” any obligations.
The union leader recalled that this protest began when the government approved the mission allowance for the PJ career, which in some cases amounts to an increase of approximately 700 euros.
Police are supporting the protests, and the platform has planned demonstrations in Lisbon on January 24 and in Porto on January 31.
The platform has also sent out an invitation to political parties for a meeting on January 26 so that the issue can be discussed and a position taken for the future.
The protests began at the initiative of a PSP agent in front of the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon and are increasingly mobilizing PSP and GNR elements throughout the country, with initiatives organized through social networks such as Facebook and Telegram.
