Retirees protest rising cost of living today

Hundreds of pensioners are pledging to take to the streets this Tuesday in the country’s main cities to demand an upgrade of 60 euros for all reforms, as well as government measures to curb inflation on essential goods.

Concentrations, demonstrations and dissemination of information among the population are planned on the main avenues and squares of the country, Isabel Gomez, president of MURPI – the National Confederation of Pensioners, Pensioners and the Elderly, told Lusa.

Activities planned for Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Leiria, Braga, Guimarães, Aveiro, Viseu, Guarda, Entroncamento, Almada, Setubal, Barreira, Beja, Évora, Grandola, Portalegre and Faro at the initiative of MURPI and Inter-Reformados (TFTP-V) .

Pensioners are demanding that the government stop the rise in prices for essential commodities such as milk, meat and fish.

According to the leader of the MURPI, even pensioners with pensions of 1,000 euros or more face difficulties in paying for medicines and the cost of renting housing, there are times when people are forced to change housing for a room.

“Pensioners received their pension at the beginning of this month in an amount that is much less than what they owe. from 3.5% and 4.8%,” the protest organizers said in a statement.
