As announced, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has ordered the opening of an investigation into the train collision that occurred this Thursday at the Coimbra B station, which resulted in the death of a 22-year-old young man.
The deputy emphasized that in the accident “a 22-year-old man was injured, who was caught by a train on the railway tracks and died as a result.”
“The investigation, the purpose of which is to establish the circumstances under which this death occurred, namely the possible presence of the crime of murder by negligence, is being carried out by the prosecutor’s office of the Department of Investigations and Criminal Cases of Coimbra,” the deputy emphasized in a note published on the website of the prosecutor’s office of the District of Coimbra.
The accident alert was issued at 19:28 this Thursday due to a railway collision at the Coimbra B station, which resulted in the death of one person, a source from the sub-regional command of the Coimbra region told Lusa.
Heitor Santos, head of the Coimbra Sapadores firefighters, said this Thursday in statements to the media at the scene that the victim was a 23-year-old young man of Guinean nationality.
The same source said that the young man was caught by a freight train traveling from south to north.
The northern line was changed but not cut, he added.
Members of the Sapadores de Coimbra, Coimbra volunteer firefighters, INEM and PSP were on the scene, a total of 24 fighters supported by nine vehicles.
