Disagreement between fans led to one person being shot dead and 36 people arrested in Paraguay on Friday among Olimpia and Cerro Porteño supporters in Sembi, about 20 kilometers from Asuncion.
According to police, the 33-year-old victim was shot in the back while returning to his supporters’ bus, which was hit by several rocks, forcing fans to leave and confront the aggressors.
Cerro Porteño fans reportedly crossed paths and threw stones at the car of Olimpia fans who had taken to the street to respond to the attack.
The death occurred as the Olimpia fan was already returning to the bus, followed by 40 people, almost all of whom were detained for questioning, with the exception of four minors aged 15 to 17, who were handed over to their families.
In Paraguay, authorities announced the introduction of facial recognition technology, the creation of a fan database and additional sanctions for those involved in vandalism as measures to improve security at football stadiums.
