“No one is above the law”: Montenegro reacts to suspicions of corruption in Madeira

Luis Montenegro reacted this Wednesday to the ongoing investigation in Madeira and confirmed Miguel Albuquerque’s decision not to resign. “No one is above the law. (…) There must be responsibility, if applicable, or rehabilitation,” the SDP chairman emphasized.

The head of the regional government of Madeira is suspected of corruption, economic involvement in business and malfeasance, as well as possible violation of community rules in the field of public procurement.

This Wednesday, the Ministry of Justice and the National Anti-Corruption Unit of the Judicial Police are carrying out a major judicial operation in Madeira and on the mainland. “I hope the investigation will move quickly,” Luis Montenegro said, demanding “clarification” of the facts.

“I hope that clarifications will be swift and clear to ensure the smooth functioning of both political bodies and justice,” he said.

The difference between this and the Prime Minister’s case, which was withdrawn due to suspicions that he was the target of Operation Influencer, was “more than many”, he stressed. “I have always maintained that this did not happen because of the paragraph [escrito pela Procuradora-Geral da República] that the Prime Minister resigned,” recalled Luis Montenegro, for whom “from a political point of view, nothing changes.”

This Wednesday, three people were arrested as a result of the PS mega-operation: Pedro Calado, President of the Funchal City Council, Avelino Fariña, President of AFA and another leader of the construction team.
