Andre Ventura defended the firing of Miguel Albuquerque this Wednesday. The president of the regional government of Madeira is suspected of corruption, economic involvement in business and malfeasance, as well as possible violation of community rules in the field of public procurement.
President Chegi mentioned the “few conditions” that the Social Democrat fulfilled to continue working, so “there is no other situation” other than dismissal. “He is the main suspect” and “whoever is at the head of the government cannot be accused of corruption,” he noted, and “in the case of the mayor of Funchal [Pedro Calado] This is not just a suspicion, but a very serious suspicion.”
In this Wednesday The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the National Anti-Corruption Unit of the Judicial Police are conducting a major judicial operation in Madeira and on the mainland.
Andre Ventura compared the investigation in Madeira with what happened during the dismissal of Antonio Costa. “We cannot have one standard for the prime minister” and another for this case, he said, noting that the accumulation of “suspicion after suspicion at the national level creates a lot of mistrust among the population.”
