Socialist doctor Alvaro Belesa will be the national representative of Pedro Nuno Santos’ candidacy for the post of head of government in the legislative elections on March 10, the PS announced this Thursday.
Beleza agreed to become the representative of the PS general secretary after he refused to head the party list of the Vila Real district due to objections from some local leaders.
The socialist doctor justified his resignation by saying that “he will be the last of the paratroopers” on the parliamentary lists.
Before the meeting of the Political Commission of the PS, which approved the candidates for deputies, on Tuesday, the doctor and president of the Cedes association justified his withdrawal from the Vila Real list and defended the reform of the electoral system.
“One of the causes that I have been advocating for many years is reforming the electoral system with single-member districts, bringing elected officials closer to voters, party primaries. So, obviously, I would be the last of the paratroopers – especially since I am not either I love flying on airplanes,” he said, believing, on the other hand, that “it is necessary to make room for the youngest.”
Deputy Fatima Pinto from Chavez was appointed head of the PS list in the Vila Real district.
Alvaro Beleza was born on September 26, 1958 in Lisbon. He is currently Director of the Blood Service at the Lisbon Norte Hospital Center/Hospital Santa Maria and President of the Headquarters Coordination Council.
