The Minister of the Interior clarified this Thursday that the Lisbon City Council must authorize the far-right demonstration planned for February 3, after the municipality approved a vote against the action called by neo-Nazis.
“According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, those who authorize demonstrations […] municipal councils. Of course, city councils do this in the opinion of the security forces,” responded José Luis Carneiro after being asked about responsibility for authorizing the far-right protest in Martim Moniz in Lisbon.
On the sidelines of a meeting of ministers responsible for the internal governance of the European Union (EU) in Brussels, the Portuguese official added that security forces were “currently carrying out a risk assessment.”
