Alvaro Belesa suspends his duties as President of SEDES because he is a representative of the PS

The doctor and socialist activist Alvaro Beleza announced this Friday that he has temporarily suspended his duties as president of the civil association SEDES for agreeing to be the representative candidate of the PS leader in the March legislative elections.

“I took this yesterday [quinta-feira] initiative to temporarily suspend my duties as President of SEDES until the legislative elections to be held on March 10, as a result of my agreeing to become the national representative of my party’s candidacy,” Alvaro Belesa said in a statement.

According to the current representative Pedro Nuno Santos, this decision is aimed at protecting the independence of SEDES (Association for Economic and Social Development) “in the eyes of its associates” and citizens and has already been communicated to the President of the Council of the Association. the General Assembly, José Roquette and the Coordinating Council, which “expressed unanimous support.”

Until the early legislative elections on March 10, the presidency of SEDES will be held by the vice-president of the Coordination Council, Carlos Alves, the statement also said.

On Thursday, the PS announced that Álvaro Belesa is the national representative of candidate Pedro Nuno Santos for the post of head of government in the elections to the Assembly of the Republic.

Beleza agreed to become the representative of the PS general secretary after he refused to head the party list of the Vila Real district due to objections from some local leaders.

The socialist doctor, director of the Blood Service at the Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte – Hospital de Santa Maria, justified his exit by saying that “he will be the last of the paratroopers” on the lists of deputies.

Before the meeting of the PS Political Commission, which confirmed the candidates for parliament, on Tuesday, Alvaro Beleza spoke in favor of electoral reform.

“One of the causes that I have been advocating for many years is reforming the electoral system with single-member districts, bringing elected officials closer to voters, party primaries. So, obviously, I would be the last of the paratroopers – – Especially since I am too I don’t like to go on an airplane,” he said, believing, on the other hand, that “it is necessary to make room for the little ones.”

Deputy Fatima Pinto from Chávez was appointed head of the PS list in the Vila Real district.
