Two people were killed this Sunday when a car collided with a plane that failed to land at an airfield in eastern Belgium, police said.
The ultralight plane crashed into a car parked on the side of the road near the airfield in Spa and both vehicles caught fire, local police chief Jean-Michel Lejeune told AFP.
“Unfortunately, there were two victims on the plane,” he added, noting that it was likely a bad landing.
The 32-year-old pilot and the second victim were German, according to the Belgian news agency. The driver of the car, who survived, was not in the car at the time of the accident.
The accident occurred approximately 100 meters from the airfield of Spa, a city located in eastern Belgium and one of the country’s main tourist destinations, home to some of the most famous natural mineral water springs.
Several environmental groups were on site to prevent contamination of the resort’s waters.
Crews set up barriers to prevent spilled fuel from the plane from polluting the environment and blocked traffic on a section of the road leading from the Sauvénière spring to the town of Francorchamps.
The airport will be closed until Monday.
