Dust from North Africa affects air quality in Portugal

Since Sunday, mainland Portugal has been under a blanket of dust from North Africa. The airborne dust that hit Cape Verde, the Canary Islands and the Madeira Archipelago last week has reached the European continent, worsening air quality. The UK, Belgium and the Netherlands are among the countries through which the particles pass.

The dust is “affecting the entire continent” but should clear from Tuesday, said Maria Joao Frada, a meteorologist at the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere. When air quality deteriorates, children, the elderly, and people with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are advised to avoid prolonged physical exertion, limit outdoor physical activity, and stay indoors if possible.

The week on the Portuguese mainland starts with cloudy skies and falling temperatures: sun returns from Wednesday, with maximum temperatures ranging from 13 to 22° C. Over the weekend, Vila Nova de Famalicão recorded a temperature of 24.2° C, and on the islands in Porto Moniz (Madeira) reached 27.8°C.
