The number of people seeking treatment for alcohol-related problems rose to 4,867 in 2022, the highest in 10 years, driven largely by those who were readmitted to the hospital, according to a report released Tuesday.
According to the 2022 Annual Report – National Alcohol Situation, published by the Intervention Service for Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies (SICAD), in 2022, 13,827 alcohol users with alcohol use problems were treated in a community alcohol network.
Of the 4,867 people who started treatment in 2022, 1,546 were readmitted and 3,321 became new users.
The SICAD document, now called the Institute of Addictive Behavior and Dependency (ICAD), also states that for the second year in a row, the number of users of outpatient services also increased (+4%) after a decline in 2020, still remaining slightly below the 2019 figure. , before the pandemic.
The number of people starting treatment during the year also increased for the second year in a row (+9% compared to 2021). The increase was more pronounced among readmissions (+17%) than among new users (+5%), with the number of readmitted people at the highest level in 10 years and the number of new users already close to pre-pandemic levels. .
Authorities recorded more than 4,500 hospital admissions with a primary alcohol-related diagnosis in 2022, as binge drinking and binge drinking increased, particularly among women.
Last June, the 5th National Population Substance Use Survey 2022 already showed an increase in the prevalence of alcohol consumption between 2017 and 2022 (from 49.1% to 56.4%).
For alcohol, the data showed that the prevalence of lifetime consumption (75.8%) decreased compared to 2017 (86.4%), approaching the values recorded between 2001 and 2012.
The prevalence of binge drinking (rapid and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages) at least once over the past year was 10.3% of the total population, which is consistent with the values in 2012 and 2017, with consumers being predominantly men aged 25 to 44 years.
