The Home Minister expressed concern this Wednesday about protests organized by farmers using agricultural machinery on various roads in the country and called for the right to mobility not to be jeopardized.
“We have learned that there is an intention to close some roads and conditions of movement in the country. My call is that everyone strives to fulfill and guarantee compliance with this responsibility,” José Luis Carneiro said in statements to journalists before the meeting with the PSP, GNR and civil defence.
The Home Secretary is participating this Wednesday in a high-level meeting with the PSP, GNR and the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority regarding the protests scheduled for Thursday.
At the initiative of the Portuguese Civil Farmers’ Movement, from 6 am, Portuguese farmers will demonstrate with agricultural machinery on the roads of different parts of the country, demanding “fair conditions” and “performance assessment”.
“We must not jeopardize fundamental rights such as the right to mobility,” warned José Luis Carneiro, also asking the organizers of the protests to properly report them to the competent authorities.
Answering a question about the reaction of security forces to the protests and how this topic will be discussed at the meeting, the minister said that “from the first hours, when manifestations of the occupation of public space began to appear, the security forces are closely monitoring what is happening.” “.
The government official also warned of “attempts to exploit” the protests, without specifying what he was talking about or mentioning an anti-Islam demonstration planned for Saturday in the Muraria area.
