The President of Sao Tome noted this Wednesday that geopolitical crises, incessant wars and growing tensions between countries have shaken the world, and called on the alliance of states to find joint solutions that will defuse conflicts before they cause humanitarian tragedies.
Carlos Vila Nova spoke at the ceremony for presenting New Year’s greetings from representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in the state of Sao Tome.
In addition to pointing out the “multi-faceted issues” that affected Sao Tome and Principe and its people, the head of state of Sao Tome noted that after decades of “relative stability”, the international arena is “shaken by recent events that have challenged this premise”, namely ” geopolitical crises, constant wars and growing tensions between nations.”
Carlos Vila Nova considered that these situations highlight “the urgent need for effective diplomacy through credible international institutions” and stressed that “the systematic violation of international law and the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations must be condemned.”
“International peace and security depend on our collective ability to confront these challenges and restore norms-based order. […] We cannot accept a system in which stronger countries abuse force, physical or economic, to subjugate less powerful countries,” Carlos Vila Nova emphasized.
The Sao Tome president pointed to a “regressive trend” recorded in 2023 given the “fragility of democratic regimes in some corners of the globe” and advocated “coordinated efforts to preserve democratic institutions, protect human rights and encourage civic participation.” .
“We are concerned about the repetition of unconstitutional changes of government in a number of African countries. These abrupt transitions not only undermine the internal stability of these countries, but also negatively affect regional and international cooperation,” said Carlos Vila Nova.
The head of state of Sao Tome believed that “the continuation of Russia’s war against Ukraine” had led to a “worrying resumption of the arms race” that poses a threat to global security, and in the Middle East he said that “it looks like creating, as far as possible, more one conflict with consequences close to a humanitarian catastrophe.”
“It is important that the countries of the world come together so that, while there is still time, the suffering of thousands of civilians and innocent people in the Gaza Strip can be put to an end,” the President of Sao Tome said.
On the other hand, he noted that “the economic impacts of these conflicts are being felt around the world,” emphasizing “the interconnectedness of global economies and the urgent need for a coordinated global response to mitigate such impacts.”
“Rising tensions in various regions of the world should prompt us to seek joint solutions aimed at defusing conflicts before they develop into humanitarian tragedies and disasters on a global scale. […] Faced with these complex, interconnected challenges, it is critical that countries come together in a collective effort to achieve peace, security and sustainable development,” said the President of Sao Tome.
The Ambassador of Cape Verde, in his capacity as Dean of Diplomats accredited to Sao Tome and Principe, assured the Head of State of Sao Tome that all partner countries and institutions of the State of Sao Tome “share the same will and commitment to promote prosperity and well-being.” about the extraordinary people of Sao Tome and Principe and this wonderful island country.”
“Our determination to continue working together, to increasingly strengthen the dialogue, to identify more mutually beneficial opportunities for our countries,” said Deontina Carvalho.
