Farmers concentrated near the Caia border, in Elvas, Portalegre district, today threatened to take their protests to Lisbon unless the government contacts them about the sector’s demands.
“We already have confirmation from Spain that they [agricultores] they will move forward with closing the borders, so our actions here in Caye no longer make sense. If they don’t come [Governo] talk to us, we will soon take Lisbon,” João Díaz Coutinho of the Civic Farmers Movement told Lusa news agency.
The official also said that “everything is open” regarding the protests, emphasizing that the goal set for this Thursday has been achieved.
This Thursday, farmers took to the streets with their tractors, from north to south, demanding recognition of the sector and fair conditions, in a protest that is blocking several roads, as has happened in other parts of Europe.
