PS is open to measures that respond to problems within the country’s capabilities

The Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party, Pedro Nuno Santos, defended this Friday the need to find measures that would respond to the problems of the different professional classes, but within the financial capabilities of the country.

“It is clear that we must do and strive to ensure that all Portuguese people belonging to different professional groups feel respected, we must strive for this, we must seek measures that respond to their problems, always within the financial and economic capabilities of the country.” , said Pedro Nuno Santos.

The Socialist leader spoke to journalists in Agua de Pau, in the municipality of Lagoa, on the island of São Miguel, where this Friday he participated in the campaign for the regional legislative elections in the Azores, after facing increasing protests from experts various classes.

Pedro Nuno Santos stressed that one cannot “promise what a country cannot achieve” but must defend “efforts to ensure that all people feel respected and considered.”

Noting that the PS is the party of “economic and social progress,” but also that it maintains “greater stability, predictability, security in people’s lives,” the Socialist leader noted that “although he is right, when it is necessary to face a crisis, wages will be cut , pensions will be cut, career growth will be frozen, social spending will be cut,” the PS had “a completely different attitude.”

“This is an advantage that people from different professional groups know: we will always do everything to maintain the stability of people’s lives,” he assured.

While still assuring that he is aware of the “difficulties and anger of many Portuguese,” Pedro Nuno Santos stressed that we cannot forget that “over the years, wages have increased, pensions have increased, social spending has increased and public debt has decreased.” “.

Asked if there was scope for more measures to support farmers, the PS general secretary replied: “We must work with farmers, like any other professional group, to seek measures to meet their wishes, always within the framework of a response.” it is a collective approach that must take into account the economic and financial situation of the country.”

“But within the budget constraints that we have to face, we, in this case farmers, have to find the right solutions. It is very important that we not only present good measures, but also have the opportunity to listen and involve them in the work. solutions,” he added.

Asked why he is leaving the Azores this Friday when PSD national leader Luis Montenegro will remain in the region until Sunday, the day of the regional elections, Pedro Nuno Santos explained that this is “what was planned.” , adding: “But fortunately my comrades from the PS/Açores wish for me to come here.”

Portuguese farmers have taken to the streets with their tractors in various parts of the country since Thursday, demanding “fair conditions” and a “performance assessment”, in a protest that has already blocked several roads.

The protests by Portuguese farmers are organized by the Civic Farmers Movement, which joins demonstrations in other European countries including France, Greece, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Spain.

The government has launched an aid package worth more than 400 million euros aimed at mitigating the impact of the drought and strengthening the Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy, ensuring most measures will come into force this month except those dependent on a green light from Brussels.

The European Commission will prepare a proposal to reduce the administrative burden on farmers, which will be discussed by the 27 member states on February 26.
