The President of the Republic and the Prime Minister of Cape Verde on Saturday were proud of the team’s progress at the Championship of African Nations (CAN) after being eliminated in the quarter-finals by South Africa.
The head of state, who was watching the game in Ivory Coast, came down to the field to congratulate the team after losing 2-1 on penalties.
“I am proud of the Blue Sharks’ journey through this Canada,” Jose Maria Neves wrote on Facebook along with photos of the team at the end of Saturday’s match.
“They represented the whole country with dignity and we proved that when we are united we can do more,” he added, believing the team deserved “a lot of respect from everyone.”
Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, on the same social network, praised “the best performance in the history of CAN in a tense game against the South African team.”
“This unforgettable journey, full of determination, talent and fighting spirit, fills every Cape Verdean with deep pride,” he said, believing that “the unity and tireless support of the entire nation was the true strength of this team, demonstrating a spirit of unity and unwavering determination.” , he added.
The head of government expressed “gratitude” for demonstrating “to the world the strength and spirit of blue sharks.”
