The Assembly of the Republic will hear the association of citizens born in Portugal who cannot acquire citizenship.

This Wednesday, Parliament unanimously approved the PCP’s proposed hearing of the cultural association “Moinho da Juventude” to seek clarification on citizens born in Portugal who cannot acquire Portuguese citizenship.

This demand was approved this Wednesday by the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees and received a positive vote from all the parties present.

“We all know that there are citizens born in Portugal from parents who were already in Portugal at the time of birth and live here, some of them have reached the age of 40 or so – I managed to meet one of such cases – who have no nationality . They have no nationality. nationality, but they also do not have any documents, because their situation is completely abnormal,” communist MP Alma Rivera stressed, presenting the text.

The PKP MP stated that these people “are in a situation of increased vulnerability” and that it is important to “understand why and what restrictions and what prevents them from getting around these situations.”

In the statement, the communists cite that “there is an incalculable number of citizens who were born in Portugal, but for a variety of reasons, including the fact that parents could never settle families before they were born or they did not have the ability or way to collect all the supporting evidence. this documentation, they are not recognized as Portuguese citizens.”

PS MP Pedro Delgado Alves welcomed the application and acknowledged that other organizations could be heard on the matter.

“Work to expand [da lei da nacionalidade], both in 2018 and 2020, was to try to avoid as much as possible that these people are in a situation where they do not have access to what is their nationality from the very beginning, which is often their original nationality . If we still have something to fix, I think this is a good opportunity to do it now, ”he defended himself.

The socialist emphasized that the changes in the citizenship law in the two years mentioned were aimed at eliminating, as far as possible, situations “which in all respects correspond to people whose connection to the national community is connected with the Portuguese national community who were born here.” and lived here for many years.

PSD’s Monica Quintela also welcomed the application and stressed that “you need to see the gaps that need to be filled” in this law.

Chegi parliamentary leader Pedro Pinto and MP from the Liberal Initiative (IL) Patricia Gilvaz also considered this hearing relevant.

For Livre, the sole deputy, Ruy Tavares, also warned of cases of people who “because of the service [prisional] cannot have access to citizenship”, leaving them in “an uncertain position that does not even contribute to their reintegration”.
