The Union of All Education Professionals (Stop) is organizing a “big national rally” in Lisbon on March 2 so that public schools are not forgotten during the election campaign, the union’s coordinator said this Monday.
André Pestana told Luca that the initiative aims to “remind you that the next government, whether more left-wing or more right-wing, must invest seriously in public schools and in the dignity of their professionals.”
The person in charge stressed that the idea of unrest involves, using the current context of legislative elections, the launching of an initiative that “is a campaign not for parties, but for public schools”, which he hopes will culminate in a large mobilization of education professionals in Lisbon .
“Whether our students are the children of rich people or poor people, this [na escola pública] that everyone can equally have the right to an excellent education. This is our battle,” he emphasized.
The union leader stressed that if parties “forget” about the dignity of professionals after the elections, they can “count on Stop” to continue the fight.
“There are parties that talk about associations or training vouchers, but we want to create a public school of excellence, and a public school of excellence can only exist if everyone who works there has dignity,” he said.
The year 2023 was marked by successive strikes by education workers and several demonstrations by teachers.
