On Tuesday, the European Parliament (EP), at the request of the PCP, will discuss the problem of drought in several European Union (EU) countries due to the consequences it has, for example, on agriculture and livestock production in Portugal and Spain.
Debates in the European Parliament, which holds a plenary session in Strasbourg, France, this week, are scheduled to begin later in the day.
In its statement, the PKP justified the request for debate on “drought and extreme drought situations in different areas and countries,” recalling that these phenomena are “increasingly frequent” and have “significant negative” consequences on the lives of the population.
Droughts, which are increasingly occurring in countries such as Portugal, Italy and Spain, “more or less systematically create a number of difficulties with regard to agricultural and livestock activities” and access to water.
The party therefore insisted that debate was necessary to find “the right answers, not only immediate but essentially structural.”
Five days ago, the government of Catalonia (Spain) declared a drought emergency.
In Portugal, the phenomenon, which has been observed throughout much of 2023, has already prompted the government to announce water rationing measures in some areas of the country in early 2024.
