Former PAN leader André Silva announced his resignation from the party this Monday, saying that the party had “lost its core” by supporting the regional government of Madeira, part of the SDS/CDU-PP coalition.
“My activism in the party becomes unbearable when the MHP stubbornly supports the perpetuation of a tentacular regime whose modus operandi has been exposed and disgusts every democrat,” writes a former representative of the party, now led by Ines de Sousa Real, in the newspaper Publico.
In an opinion piece entitled “The PAN Has Stopped Representing Me,” the first MP elected by the party in 2015 noted that the PAP “has become deeply irresponsible, has forgotten those who have no voice, has given up the fight, and so today represents 1% of voting intentions “
“He also stopped representing me, and today [segunda-feira] I have announced my resignation,” said a party spokesman between 2014 and 2021, for which the party “goes from political box to box, apparently looking for whoever has more mandates to offer it.”
According to André Silva, the “notorious willingness to dance with (almost) everyone” combined with the desire to promote an image of moderation and sensitivity has turned “the PAN into a party almost useless for the causes it claims to defend and which justify its existence” in the country.
“The PNS is more than elastic, it is now plastic. This plasticity was evident in the variant of support for the PSD/CDZ government in Madeira,” the former MP criticized, a variant that he classified as “deviating” for three reasons: “on the part of the regime in question, the lack of compensation for the change, the justifications provided.”
But also because of the “selling of party values”, lamented André Silva, believing that “the PAN lost its backbone because it wanted to dance so much” in the choice it made in Madeira, sharply criticizing the position on Curral. Das ropeway project.
In response to this rejection of RTP3’s statements, the PAN representative considered that the arguments put forward by André Silva “have no basis in existence.”
“A unique and entirely personal decision that I must respect, despite the fact that I consider the moment of its adoption to be deeply immature,” criticized Ines de Souza Real, arguing that the former leader’s decision “signifies a lack of true commitment to the cause.”
Speaking minutes before the debate with President Chegi as part of the March 10 legislative elections, the lone PAN MP also stressed that “PAN has been the opposition party that has achieved the most success in the causes it represents in the Assembly of the Republic.”
Following the regional elections in September 2023, the PAN-elected regional deputy, Mónica Freitas, and the PSD/Madeira president entered into an agreement for parliamentary influence over the legislature, thus ensuring the viability of a third executive headed by Miguel Albuquerque.
Meanwhile, the President of the Government of Madeira resigned from his position as Representative of the Republic a week ago after being named as a defendant in the context of a process in which Madeira is being investigated for suspected corruption and which led to the arrest of the President of the Madeira Chamber of Funchal, Pedro Calado (PSD). , who resigned from his post, and two businessmen in the construction sector.
