Two brothers, aged 13 and 16, have been arrested on suspicion of murdering their mother in Spain.

Two minors, aged 13 and 15, were arrested and confessed to killing their mother on Wednesday in Castro Urdiales, Cantabria province, Spain, the Spanish press reported. The older brother allegedly stabbed his mother in the neck.

The young people pretended to be victims of a kidnapping attempt that would end in the death of their mother, 48-year-old catechist Silvia Lopez. The boys, adopted from the eastern European country, called their grandmother early Thursday morning and told her this version of events while their father worked the night shift at a steel company in the Basque Country.

A woman’s body was found Wednesday evening in the back seat of her own car, leaning against the wall of her home’s garage. He was gagged, his head was covered with a garbage bag, and he suffered several injuries. At the time the body was discovered, the whereabouts of the children were unknown.

Police suspected the minors from an early age and mobilized resources to locate them. As a result, both were detained in the park. One of them even tried to hide in the vegetation. When the police arrived at the scene, the minors admitted to their crime.

According to investigators, the older brother fatally attacked his mother, stabbing her in the neck.

Police immediately ruled out the possibility that it was a gender-based crime because the victim’s partner worked.

The 13-year-old detainee was found not guilty and transferred to Child Protective Services.
