14 people were injured, two of them seriously, after being hit by tree branches while riding the Tomahawk roller coaster at PortAventura amusement park in Catalonia.
According to the organizers, strong winds caused a tree to fall near the attraction.
In a statement, the amusement park said it was an event “completely unrelated to the operation and maintenance” of the rides and blamed the incident on strong winds in the region.
“PortAventura World is monitoring the evolving health conditions of the victims and is fully prepared to provide the victims with the necessary assistance and support,” it said.
The two seriously injured were taken to the Bellvitge Hospital in Barcelona and the Juan XXIII University Hospital in Tarragona by Emergency Medical Services helicopter.
Three other victims, in less serious condition, were taken to nearby centers, namely the Santa Tecla Hospital and the Hospital de Reus, also in Tarragona.
Catalan police announced the start of a technical investigation.
