This Monday, the IL President accused Chegu of “utter stupidity” and irresponsibility for proposing to recognize the right of the security forces to strike, given that this measure would jeopardize the security of the country.
Following a meeting with the Independent Union of Doctors, Rui Rocha was asked about the proposal in Chegi’s election program to “recognize the right of members of the Security Forces to party affiliation, as well as the right to strike.”
“This is complete nonsense. This is absolutely contrary to the interests of the country and the security interests of the Portuguese,” he criticized.
According to the Liberal leader, “the functions of the police have certain boundaries” different from other professions, since “they must always ensure the safety of the Portuguese people.”
“Now I ask: if the police went on strike, if it were possible (I hope that never happens), would the criminals go on strike? Would criminals stop committing crimes?” he asked.
According to Rui Rocha, these restrictions that the security forces have on their profession must continue to exist because “it is fundamental for the security of the Portuguese.”
“And also because the PNP, which will be included in this proposal, is a force of a military nature, and therefore the question arises: what next? Will the military also be able to strike? If Portugal is attacked, Chega will admit that “Can the military go on strike and allow the invading forces to enter the country?” he further questioned.
For IL President, this proposal from Andre Ventura’s party “is completely irresponsible.”
