The US Senate approved an aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

The US Senate voted on Tuesday to approve a $95.34 billion (€88 billion) aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, according to Reuters.

The relief package has been debated in Congress for months and has sparked divisions between Republicans and President Joe Biden’s Democratic administration.

The decision will also be sent to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, which has final say on the relief package.

“It has been years, maybe decades, since the Senate approved a bill that has such a huge impact not only on our national security, not only on the security of our allies, but on the security of Western democracy,” the Senate Majority Leader said. – Chuck Schumer.

For months, Joe Biden has called on Congress to urgently provide new aid to Ukraine and U.S. partners in the Indo-Pacific region, including Taiwan. Following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, the US president also requested funds for an American ally, as well as humanitarian aid for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Ukrainian authorities have also warned of a weapons shortage as Russia prepares more attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the fact that the US Senate voted for a bill providing $61 billion in aid to Ukraine.

“American assistance brings a just peace to Ukraine and restores global stability, leading to greater security and prosperity for all Americans and the free world,” he said.

The funding is critical to Kyiv’s ability to fend off Russian attacks and keep its economy afloat as the war approaches its third year. The US bill has yet to pass a vote in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where it has long faced opposition.
