Pedro Nuno Santos criticized Chega’s electoral program from a financial point of view during the debate with Andre Ventura, broadcast this Wednesday by the television channel TVI. “Chegi has an answer for everyone. This cannot be taken seriously. (…) The program is impossible and irresponsible,” says the PS Secretary General. As an example, he cited Chegi’s proposal to increase pensions: “It’s not nine billion euros at once. Not nine billion every year.”
On corruption, the socialist accused the party led by Andre Ventura of wanting to “pretend to fight” the problem by increasing confiscation and seizure of assets from people involved in legal cases. “This does not bring anything new. Preventive arrests and confiscation of assets already exist,” said Pedro Nuno Santos. In contrast, André Ventura argued that “the PS and PSD never had the courage to carry out this reform” and that the Socialists “always voted against increasing penalties for corruption.” According to Chegi, the way in which preventive seizure and asset confiscation is currently carried out is “ineffective.”
Regarding the PS’s proposal to establish a minimum period for doctors in the SNS, Pedro Nuno Santos explained that this measure “will only be implemented with the consent” of the professionals. Andre Ventura accused the PS secretary general of wanting to “tie doctors to the SNS,” referring to the views expressed by Adalberto Campos Fernandez on Monday regarding the proposal. “The former socialist health minister called this a Stalinist measure,” he noted.
The prime ministerial candidates continued to trade accusations in the section on health care. In line with what he defended in the presentation of the PS election platform, Pedro Nuno Santos said that Chega, IL and AD share the goal of “redirecting resources to the private sector.” Andre Ventura proposes paying doctors overtime, increasing the number of medical courses and renewing public-private partnerships. “The state saved money through the partnership and improved health,” he said.
There are two sides to investing in healthcare. Chega criticized the “waste of money” on social media. “The government invested 15 billion euros and decided nothing,” said Andre Ventura. Pedro Nuno Santos responded: “Chega believes that too much has already been spent. We want to keep investing.”
On housing, the socialist said the PS had launched the “biggest public investment program” but it “takes time”. “Tax breaks didn’t work. (…) The abolition of golden visas and restrictions on local accommodation have increased the housing stock,” he added. Speaking about local homeowners, Andre Ventura said socialist governments had “carried out the biggest attack in history on those who were rebuilding homes.”
Chega’s proposal to reduce the possibility of judicial appeal by a third was also on the table. “We have a tangle of resources in law. José Socrates has already appealed 30 times. (…) There is an abuse of rights,” said Andre Ventura.
