This Thursday, the European Commission decided to file a case against Portugal in the Court of Justice of the European Union due to insufficient application of measures to prevent and manage the introduction and spread of invasive alien species.
This refers to non-compliance with measures to protect biodiversity from invasive species (Regulation on Invasive Exotic Species or EEI Regulation) listed by the European Union (EU).
Portugal and five other Member States “have not developed, implemented and submitted to the Commission an action plan (or set of action plans) to address the most important pathways for the introduction and spread of invasive alien species of concern in the EU”. according to the statement.
The Commission considers that to date the efforts of the national authorities have been unsatisfactory and insufficient, and therefore it submits claims to the Court of Justice of the European Union against the countries concerned: Bulgaria, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Latvia. and Portugal.
Invasive alien species are plants and animals that are accidentally or deliberately introduced into an area where they are not normally found.
