A 42-year-old man suspected of robbing a residential building in Leiria has been arrested and is awaiting investigation in preventive detention, the Public Security Police (PSP) announced this Thursday.
The PSP said in a statement that the man entered a house in Gandara dos Olivais early Monday morning while its occupants were sleeping.
“The suspect had already stolen a bicycle, a PlayStation console and two mobile phones when he was surprised by one of the residents in one of the rooms of the house,” PSP explained, adding that the accused tried to attack the resident “with a kitchen knife.”
The two were involved in the attacks and both suffered minor injuries, as did another resident who came to his aid.
“Once the victims were able to restrain the suspect, they immediately reported the matter to the police, who quickly arrived on the scene, recovered the various stolen items and turned them over to their rightful owners,” PSP explained.
According to the PSP, the suspect, “who is described as involved in situations involving crimes against physical integrity, theft and crimes against property,” was arrested at the scene of the crime on January 8 “for causing damage to the Leiria railway station.” “.
“After the detainee was taken to the Leiria Hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained as a result of an argument with residents,” the detainee attended the first judicial interrogation, at which the investigating judge ordered preventive detention.
