The Secretary General of the PS believes on Thursday that the pre-election debates make it possible to demonstrate that the Socialists are in dialogue with the forces of the left wing, while a “mess” reigns among the right-wing parties, which indicates instability.
This position was defended by Pedro Nuno Santos following a visit to ongoing work on the Oeste railway line between Melesas and Torres Vedras, which is due to be completed in the second half of this year.
A visit during which he was accompanied by the head of the PS list of the Lisbon Circle, Mariana Vieira da Silva, and through which he also sought to convey the message that “the national railway network is under construction.”
“We have invested in rail, in public transport and in the green transition. We are here on the Oeste line, which is being modernized, electrified and increased in capacity by reducing travel times. There are those who talk about delays in these works, but in right-wing governments we couldn’t even talk about it simply because there was no work,” he said, before finishing: “The big difference between us and them is that We are doing this, we are not putting it off,” he said.
In front of journalists, Pedro Nuno Santos, from a political point of view, tried to contrast the way the televised debates between the leaders of the left parties took place and the “controversies” between the presidents of the PSD and Cega respectively, Luis Montenegro and André Ventura, about the formation of a right-wing government.
“We have stability and progress, but with the right there is chaos. We have a right that does not understand each other, an SDP that says it rejects Chega, and a Chega that says it has a full guarantee of agreement. [de Governo] with or without Luis Montenegro,” said the Socialist leader.
Then, in a nod to how the televised debates were going, Pedro Nuno Santos said that “all Portuguese understand that among the parties of the left it is possible to speak and think about the country politely.”
“But when we look to the right, we see confusion, an inability to speak. On the right we have the PSD president saying, “No, that’s not true” regarding coalitions with Chega, but the Chega president saying what kind of government there would be if the elections resulted in a right-wing majority. In short, we see the inability of the different parties to understand each other: Andre Ventura wants Luis Montenegro, Luis Montenegro prefers Rui Rocha.” [presidente da Iniciativa Liberal]”, he said.
Asked about polls that show that the political right is ahead of all left-wing parties, the Socialist leader said that there are public opinion surveys “for every taste.”
Subsequently, he questioned whether it was correct to combine the intentions of voting for AD (the PSD/CDU-PP/PPM coalition) with those for Chegu, “because Luis Montenegro says one thing and Andre Ventura says another.”
“Based on the assumption of the leader of the SDP, that is, that he does not exist, the SDP excludes Chega from any decision of the Government. At the same time, if we look, we will see that there are no differences between the polls, since the left is always in the majority, if we compare it with AD plus the Liberal Initiative,” he argued.
From the point of view of Pedro Nuno Santos, the Portuguese “have an election campaign ahead, and they are confident that the right will not agree to a government solution that ensures stability.”
Regarding his party’s strategic positioning, he said: “PS is a center-left social democratic party, from this ideological point of view there is no change and never has been.”
“I don’t even understand that there was any doubt about this,” he added.
