The representative of the Republic in Madeira announces a solution to the political crisis on Saturday

The representative of the Republic of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, will announce his decision regarding the political crisis in the region on Saturday after a meeting this Friday, at his request, with the head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

This Friday, the office of Ireneu Barreto called the media to the Palacio de São Lourenço, the official residence of the representative of the Republic, for a public statement on Saturday.

The judge-councilor met for about an hour with the President of the Republic at the Belém Palace in Lisbon regarding the crisis caused by the dismissal of the President of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS), Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque.

According to the Political-Administrative Statute of Madeira, the responsibility for making the decision rests with the representative of the Republic, and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa can intervene in this process, including deciding to dissolve the Legislative Assembly of the region after March 24, when six months have passed. .in regional elections.

Following the dismissal of Miguel Albuquerque, Ireneu Barreto last week heard the parties represented in the region’s Legislative Assembly.

The head of the regional government resigned after he was indicted during an investigation into suspected corruption in the region, during which the then president of the Chamber of Funchal, Pedro Calado (PSD), was arrested on January 24. two businessmen from the construction industry.

On Wednesday, three detainees were released, and the Central Criminal Court discounted evidence of all economic and financial crimes attributed by prosecutors, namely the construction of a new hospital or support for the former mayor’s rally team. Pedro Calado.

According to the enforcement order, which Luza had access to, Judge Jorge Bernardes de Melo found that “there is no evidence in the case file, much less convincing evidence” that the crimes charged had been committed. The prosecutor’s office appealed this decision.

The PSD and CDS-PP, which govern the region in a coalition with parliamentary support from the PAN, insisted on the appointment of a new executive leader, believing that the parliamentary majority has the legitimacy to support the new regional government.

In this way, they seek to avoid early elections, which the remaining parties with seats in the hemisphere are defending.

The regional structure of PAN, which has a member of the Madeira parliament, has already expressed its readiness to support the new executive director without participating in the elections, renegotiating the agreement signed after the elections in September 2023.

Elected Mónica Freitas said that, at the request of the party, the paving of Estrada das Guinhas street and the construction of the cable car in Curral das Freiras will be suspended.

According to Article 231 of the Constitution, “the regional government is politically responsible to the Legislative Assembly of the autonomous region, and its president is appointed by the representative of the republic, taking into account the results of the elections.”

Article 133 specifies that the President of the Republic must “dissolve the Legislative Assemblies of the Autonomous Regions after consultation with the Council of State and the parties represented therein.”

However, according to Article 172, no assembly may be dissolved “within six months after its election.”
