The parties’ proposals for legislative elections on the national minimum wage vary: PS and PSD have a common goal of reaching one thousand euros by the end of the legislature, and the others have more ambitious goals.
The Socialists’ election platform proposes increasing the national minimum wage, currently €820, to €1,000 by the end of the next legislature in 2028, as well as renegotiating the income increase agreement signed at the Social Concert in October 2022.
These proposals were announced at the PS National Congress in January by Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos, who also set a target of reaching €900 in 2026.
PSD President Luis Montenegro also set a goal for the minimum wage to reach at least one thousand euros at the end of the legislature, adding that the average salary would be “about 1,750 euros” if the Democratic Alliance (AD) coalition is the Government.
Luis Montenegro was speaking at the presentation of the economic program of AD, the coalition uniting PSD, CDS-PP and PPM for the March 10 legislative elections.
In its election platform, the SDP states that increases in the national minimum and average wages will be based on “productivity growth and social dialogue.”
Increasing the minimum wage to a thousand euros is also Cega’s proposal, but with a shorter deadline, since Andre Ventura’s party proposes to reach this value in 2026, and also advocates the creation of a fund so that the state can help companies withstand this increase.
For the PKP, an increase in the minimum wage from the current 820 euros to 1,000 euros should be done immediately after the legislative elections, in May, the party’s general secretary Paulo Raimundo said at the PKP’s national meeting.
BE, led by Mariana Mortagua, proposes, in turn, a new trajectory for increasing the national minimum wage, with an intermediate increase to 900 euros in 2024 and an annual increase corresponding to the effect of inflation, plus 50 euros.
Livre argues that the minimum wage reaches 1,150 euros at the end of the legislature, according to measures presented by Rui Tavares’ party at its congress in Porto.
In its election programme, which is still unknown, PAN will propose increasing the national minimum wage to 1,100 euros by the end of the legislature.
IL does not specify any value in its program, instead proposing to “evolve toward an industry-based model of minimum wage negotiations rather than equal government imposition of all activities.”
