According to the indictment that the Luza agency had access to this Friday, the Ministry of State (MP) charged the man with 14 fire crimes that occurred during the summer, most of which occurred in the Serra do Montejunto, in the municipality of Cadaval.
According to the deputy, the 31-year-old man used prepared devices to delay the fire.
“The defendant planned the fire in such a way” that he knew “he would no longer be there” when the fire started, the deputy said.
The construction worker started the fire while traveling between his place of residence in Cerkala and his place of work in Algubert, both located in the same municipality.
The defendant is accused of 14 crimes related to fire: arson on July 26 in Outeiro da Cabeça (Torres Vedras), on July 27 and 28 in Peral (Cadaval), on July 31 in Figueiroa and Alguère (Cadaval), on August 4 in Alguère, August 5 in the eucalyptus grove next to Estrada Nacional 366 in Cadaval, August 7 in Casal Canizo and Cercal (Cadaval), August 11 and 12 in Sobrena (Cadaval) and August 16 in Alguber.
“The fires caused by the defendant endangered nearby bushland, warehouses and houses of unspecified value (…) which were only kept from burning due to the quick intervention of firefighters and members of the public,” he explains. .deputy
The fires he is accused of setting burned a total area of seven hectares, which in some cases corresponds to forestry.
The MP did not prove the same authorship in the fires on August 3 in Povoa (Cadaval) involving 146 militants, 44 vehicles and six aircraft, as well as on July 12 in Espinheira, in the same municipality, which was controlled only at the end of a nine-hour battle in which they accepted the participation of more than five thousand firefighters, one hundred and a half vehicles and 13 aircraft.
As a result of the two fires, about 402 hectares were burned, the commander of the Western subregion, Carlos Silva, told the Luza news agency at the time.
According to the indictment, the man is also accused of 11 offenses related to driving without a license.
The accused, who has no criminal record, was arrested by the judicial police on August 16 while he was driving his car, inside of which materials used in the production of artifacts were found.
The man is in preventive detention in a Lisbon prison awaiting trial.
At the time of the arrest, João Oliveira, director of the joint venture in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, explained that the suspect had been “investigated for several months” and that he was arrested at the scene of the crime.
According to the same source, the defendant “acted without any economic interests and only for “useless reasons,” which he called “mythomania.”
Serra do Montejunto, located in the municipalities of Alenquer and Cadaval in the district of Lisbon, was classified as a regionally protected landscape in 1999 with the aim of preserving and enhancing the landscape and natural heritage, as well as developing tourism.
The highest point in the Western Region, it rises to an altitude of 666 meters and covers an area of almost five thousand hectares, which is home to 400 species of plants and 75 different species of birds.
