Dating apps Tinder and Hinge have been sued in the US for engaging in practices designed to trick users into profiting. A spokesman for Match Group, the owner of the bids, called the process “ridiculous and unreasonable.”
The lawsuit, filed in a California court by six users, accuses Tinder and Hinge of promoting addiction by selling subscriptions that cost hundreds of dollars and allow unlimited use. Without a subscription, Tinder allows you to get 100 likes per day, but Hinge only allows eight.
“After years of manipulation, people are willing to pay obscene amounts of money to satisfy an addiction,” said attorney Timothy Giordano. Match Group ensures that Tinder and Hinge are “actively seeking people to date and rejecting applications.”
The trial comes at a time when Facebook, Instagram and others are the target of hundreds of lawsuits for using addictive mechanisms that affect the mental health of young people.
