The president of PS Açores, Vasco Cordeiro, said this Monday that it is the party with the most votes to form a government in the region, but said that the decision taken in 2020 places special demands on the representative of the Republic.
“This 2020 decision places increased demands and increased responsibility on the representative of the Republic with regard to maintaining consistency, given the results of this election and comparing the decision that has now been made with the 2020 decision,” Vasco said. Cordeiro.
The Socialist leader spoke in Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira, after a hearing with the representative of the Republic of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Pedro Catarino.
The PSD/CDU/NPM coalition won the regional elections on the 4th with 43.56% of the vote, but elected 26 of the 57 members of the Legislative Assembly, requiring three more to achieve an absolute majority.
However, the leader of the PSD Azores, Jose Manuel Bolheiro, told the representative of the republic that the coalition must form a government with a relative majority, without agreements with other parties.
Vasco Cordeiro stated that “the PS maintains its consistency” and argues that “the party that wins the elections should be able to be the first to submit to the assembly and form a government.”
However, he recalled that this did not happen in 2020, when the PS won the elections, also without an absolute majority, and Pedro Catarino appointed the leader of the PSD/Azores as president of the regional government, which formed a post-election coalition with the CDS-PP and PPM and signed agreements on parliamentary influence with Chega and IL, which guaranteed 29 of the 57 deputies of the Azores Legislative Assembly.
“This situation that we are experiencing, which culminated in the elections on February 4, is, in fact, proof that the decision that was made in 2020 was not the right decision and, therefore, the whole argument for stability has fallen apart. what was done,” he said.
