BE candidate files attack complaint in Chavez

A member of the Bloco de Esquerda por Vila Real list in the legislature filed a complaint with PSP Chaves over an alleged attack that occurred after the interrogation of a man who allegedly destroyed a party poster, the party announced this Monday.

The head of the block list of this district, Vasco Valente Lopez, told Lusa that a complaint had also been filed with the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

The victim of the alleged attack was José Luis Rodríguez, a 51-year-old electrician who ranks seventh on the BE list for Vila Real in the March 10 elections.

A PSP source confirmed that a criminal investigation had been opened for offenses against physical integrity and was unable to provide further information about what happened.

According to BE, on Sunday, after hanging a poster for the legislative elections featuring national coordinator Mariana Mortagua and Vasco Valente Lopez, José Luis Rodriguez saw his work destroyed by a man who “allegedly acted with the intention of removing” Party propaganda.

“Now the Bloc activist, seeing what was happening, interrogated the one who carried out this attack on democracy and the right to information, and was brutally attacked, forced to resort to the help of a hospital,” BE said in a statement.

In turn, Vasco Valente Lopez considered it regrettable that in the year celebrating the 50th anniversary of April 25, there is “an extreme position that leads people to commit violence against political parties.”

“This is alarming and a sign of the cavalcade of the far right (…) All parties that love democracy must think seriously about what is happening to our society,” the candidate said.
