The plenary assembly of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP), to be held in April, will examine a proposal for procedures to provide financial compensation to victims of sexual abuse in the Portuguese Catholic Church, the CEP said on Tuesday.
In a statement, the Permanent Council of the CEP, a body chaired by Bishop José Ornelas of Leiria-Fátima, said that on Monday some representatives of the VITA group were present at a meeting of that body “to present a first proposal, at the request of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, of possible criteria to be followed in awarding moral financial compensation to victims of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in Portugal.”
“Lines have been developed to continue the ongoing dialogue in order to formulate a proposal on procedures involving the diocesan commissions for the protection of minors, which will be presented at the plenary session of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference,” the statement adds.
