BE reports that the debate between Pedro Nuno Santos and Luis Montenegro disappointed the Portuguese as it was not very informative.

Bloc de Esquerda (BE) coordinator Mariana Mortagua believes today that the televised debate between the PS secretary general and the PSD president disappointed the Portuguese and defended a left majority as the solution for the country.

“People who were expecting an enlightening and clear debate on proposals and decisions will be disappointed. There is no other solution for the country than a majority on the left, and BE plays a decisive role in achieving such a majority that will serve to turn the page on the politics of the absolute majority,” the bloc leader said.

Asked about Pedro Nuno Santos’ statement about the possibility of creating an AD government, Mariana Mortagua said that “this position has further strengthened the idea that the only solution for the country involves a leftist majority.”

The PS general secretary announced on Monday in a debate with Luis Montenegro that if he loses the election, he will not make or support proposals to reject the program of the PSD-led government without committing himself in the same way to a possible first budget.

“This was not a clarifying debate in terms of proposals or solutions. The other situation is that no party will have a majority that will allow it to govern,” stressed Mortagua, speaking to journalists in Miranda do Douro, Bragança district, after a meeting with associations, local authorities and civil movements.

In response to the demonstration of law enforcement officers on Monday evening in front of the Capitol, where the debate between Pedro Nuno Santos and Luis Montenegro took place, Mariana Mortagua confirmed that the police are right in their demands for wages and risk allowance.

“These demands need to be responded to and the Government has created a problem by distributing the risk grant unevenly. Protests by security forces are legal. It is important that they do not lose the occasion for this protest and their demands in actions that can be perceived as forms of conditioning the functioning of democracy, whether in electoral acts or debates,” defended the BE coordinator.

The BE leader also stated that a demonstration was planned and was legal, adding that when it is moved to a location where an election debate between two candidates is taking place, “there is a change in the nature of this demonstration that can be read as an attempt to frame the debate as democratic.”
