The representative of the Republic in the Azores nominates Boleiro as president of the region

On Tuesday, the representative of the Republic in the Azores, Pedro Catarino, appointed José Manuel Bolheiro, leader of the Azores Social Democrats and leader of the SDS/CDU-PP/PPM coalition, as president of the regional government.

The announcement was made in Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira, at the end of the second day of hearings for parties holding seats in the new regional legislature.

“I must inform you that I have just appointed Dr. José Manuel Boleiro as chairman of the new regional government, inviting him to present a list of his future leader in the coming days,” said the representative of the republic.

Pedro Catarino warned of the consequences of a new political crisis in the region, but expressed confidence that the parties represented in parliament will cope with their responsibilities.

“It is now up to the Legislative Assembly to evaluate the program of the new regional government and decide on its future. I am convinced that the parties represented in the Parliament of the Azores, aware of the deeply negative consequences of the new political crisis, will be up to the responsibilities that voters have entrusted to them and will know at every moment how to make the most suitable option,” he said.

After the Representative of the Republic for the Azores finished his speech, José Manuel Boleiro made a short statement, ensuring that “consistency in dialogue” would be the key to his governance.

“I will strengthen my readiness for dialogue, not only what I have had so far, but even more because, on the one hand, I interpret the clear democratic legitimacy of the election result that brought us victory, but also recognizing that Without an absolute majority, it is important to ensure that this dialogue is strengthened, taking into account the experience already gained,” he said.

The handover of the names of the members of the new executive branch to the representative of the republic should take place “in the next few days,” according to the president, who assured that “this will not be conditioned by national debate.” , given the legislative elections that will take place on March 10.

“There will be no excuse for a postponement without a good reason, so I will do everything within the framework as quickly as possible,” he assured.

Regarding the distribution of the portfolios of CDS-PP and PPM, partners in the PSD coalition, José Manuel Boleiro stressed that neither he nor the leaders of the other two parties are involved in this political project “in the name and in accordance with the interests of the party.”

“I am the leader of the political project of the government coalition PSD/CDU/NPM. It is on this basis, and not with the help of proportions and arithmetic, that I will defend the interests of the Azores,” he added.
