The coordinator of the Bloco de Esquerda, Mariana Mortagua, considered it prudent this Wednesday to postpone the GNR and PSP protests until after the March legislative elections, stressing that the infighting of the security forces should not condition the electoral process.
Speaking to journalists in Braga, on the sidelines of a meeting with Bosch workers, Mariana Mortagua stressed that the protests of these professionals are legitimate and that the government should have already addressed the problem of “inequality” that it imposed when it created a subsidy for the Judicial Police and did not extend it to the forces security.
“The most sensible thing would be for the government to solve this problem as quickly as possible. And obviously it is also reasonable for the security forces to speak out, to demand, but they do not condition the electoral process and they cannot take actions that are perceived as conditioning the electoral process,” he said.
According to the bloc leader, there is “no reason” for the government not to solve the problem quickly.
He also argued that security forces should be “salaried commensurate” with the importance of their role in democracy and be “fit for that important role in democracy” by protecting “the greatest act of democracy, which is elections, the run-up to elections, pre-election debates and the moment of voting.”
He warned that elements of the PSP and PPP are “losing their minds” when they protest in ways that could jeopardize the functioning of democracy.
The Bloc coordinator also admitted that the process initiated by the Main Inspectorate of Internal Administration regarding the parade and the unauthorized concentration of elements of these security forces on Monday near the Capitol cinema, where the debate between the PS leaders took place, was normal. PSD.
“We know that this cannot happen in any other demonstration, and therefore I think that the rules should be the same for all people who legally demonstrate, for all professionals who legally demonstrate, as a sign of respect for the democratic order and with given the good reasons why they are,” he said.
Hundreds of police gathered on Monday evening outside the Capitol in Lisbon, where the debate between Luis Montenegro and Pedro Nuno Santos took place, after a concentration in which about 3,000 PSP and GNR members took part.
This concentration on the Praça do Comércio was authorized and organized by a platform bringing together the PSP trade unions and the GNR associations.
The protest near the Capitol was marked on social media by the “foreign movement” and had no platform participation, and all instructions for police officers to follow were also published through these networks.
Members of the PSP and GNR have been protesting for over a month now, demanding an allowance identical to that given to the judicial police.
