This Thursday, the government approved an extension of the period given to higher education institutions to adapt or correct the new rules required for those who want to become teachers.
The decision, approved by the Council of Ministers (CoM), makes “adjustments” to the decree-law on the legal regime of professional qualifications for teaching in pre-school education, as well as in basic and secondary education.
The press service of the Ministry of Education of Luse explained that the goal was to “make the model of conducting supervised teaching practice more flexible in order to strengthen the scientific and pedagogical autonomy of higher education institutions” and that the change extends the “terms of training.” is made available to institutions of higher education to amend and correct certain aspects of required credits,” for example, regarding “the length of courses for those already holding master’s and doctoral degrees, which increases to three semesters.”
The new diploma, which defines the rules of access to the teaching profession, aims to “attract more candidates to the profession and retain more specialists to meet the pedagogical needs of the educational system.”
With an increasingly aging class in which more than half of teachers are over 50, and an increasing number of retirees, estimates point to a shortage of 34,500 teachers within six years unless efforts are made to attract teachers.
The guardianship has taken some measures, such as the return of paid internships, increasing the staff of the pedagogical zone, in order to reduce the distances for teachers to find employment or to make it easier to enter the career.
