Mariana Mortagua aims to bring back the lost Faro deputy in 2022

BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua has set this Saturday the goal of restoring Faro’s mandate, which was lost in the last legislative elections, given that the effect of no longer having “left-leaning MPs” in the Algarve has been noticed.

Mariana Mortagua spoke at a lunchtime rally in Boliqueim, Faro district, and at the end of her speech made it clear that BE wants to elect MEP José Gusmão and thus regain the MP it lost in the 2022 elections.

“In the last elections in the Algarve there were no more left-wing MPs, and this effect was noticeable. Parliamentary representation was poorly transferred to the parties of the central bloc and Chegi,” he criticized.

Considering that the problems of the region have intensified in recent years, and ensuring that the BU will remain, even without an elected deputy, in the entire fight for the constituency, the bloc coordinator clearly outlined the goal of “returning to the presence of a deputy from the Left Bloc in the Assembly of the Republic” elected by Faro.

“It is the left that will be the social majority in the country, that will be the majority in parliament to change things, to carry out policies that matter, and José Gusmão will be part of this majority that will change this country on the 10th.” March,” he said.

Using his campaign slogan, Mortagua argued that this majority would “do what has never been done.”

The day was dedicated to Faro, but the start of the morning was alarming because, despite the fact that the BE coordinator was at the meeting place at the Bravura Dam in Lagos, part of the delegation of journalists could not reach the place, and statements were made already near the restaurant where the meeting took place. this lunch meeting, at the Museu – Cavacos Catering restaurant in Boliqueim, Loule.

In these initial statements to the media, the BE Coordinator made clear her concerns about the drought situation in the region, with the dam being singled out as one of the “hardest hit by drought”.

“This is not a problem of the future, this is a problem of the present. There are already municipalities that want to limit access to water, that want to increase the price of water. We know that this measure has been suspended and has yet to be applied. Let’s see if it was simply suspended before the elections and if after the elections a different decision will be made by these municipalities,” he warned.

According to Mortagua, “the way to combat drought is not by punishing small consumers and small farmers,” noting that for years industry associations and BE itself have “warned of a serious drought problem in the country and a very serious drought.” in the Algarve.”

“Apparently there are political parties that prefer to spend ten years talking about megalomaniacal projects that never materialized, rather than doing the obvious – adapting tourism to drought conditions or avoiding the loss of water that occurs every year in Portugal. especially in Portugal. Algarve. It is also necessary to support small-scale agriculture,” he suggested.

Recalling cuts to smallholder farmers under the Common Agricultural Policy (PAC), the BE Coordinator warned that “without supporting small-scale agriculture, it will not be possible to achieve an agricultural transition that adapts to and minimizes the impacts of drought.”

“When water is diverted for other purposes, when there is no effective management of water resources, it is actually the small farmers who suffer first, and then the prices of all the goods consumed rise. Diverting water for unnecessary use in tourism or for production intended for export rather than small-scale agriculture development is a failure in resource management,” he said.

Mariana Mortagua also wants to “limit the way tourists consume water,” citing as examples the possibility of water parks in the region running on salt water and golf courses using wastewater for irrigation.
