This Monday, the representative of Livre defended the immediate use of the emergency housing fund proposed by the party in the state budget to help the homeless, emphasizing that “Livre is not saying a few things, Livre is helping people.”
During the campaign for early legislative elections held in Saldanha, Lisbon, Rui Tavares expressed concern about the 17% increase in 2023 in the number of eviction applications reported this Monday, as well as the phenomenon of homelessness in the country and in some districts of the capital.
The leader recalled that at the last legislative session, Livre put forward as a requirement in budget negotiations with the PS the creation of an emergency housing fund, which came into force on January 1 and the funds of which are generated from 25% of the stamp tax levied. in real estate transactions.
Tavares said that, according to calculations confirmed by the finance minister, there is “about 100 million euros a year” at stake, which could help people who work frequently and “have an income but no longer have a home.”
“In the first two months of the year, a quarter of stamp duty is already being allocated and so at the moment we don’t know what the exact amounts are. In fact, we are going to ask the Government to find out the exact amount, but this proportion could be between 10 and 20 million euros and could already be used to solve this particular emergency situation that these people are experiencing,” he said.
The historian showed confidence in electing more deputies in Lisbon, the circle he leads in these elections and from which he was elected in 2022, and “pulled up the coals” on the recent history of the Livre, which agreed with the PS on measures such as the national railway pass or unemployment benefits for victims of domestic violence.
“Unlike others who say some things that sometimes seem very important, Livre does not say some things, Livre helps people,” he emphasized.
Regarding the fact that PSD President Luis Montenegro did not respond during a radio debate this morning when Rui Tavares challenged the right to say whether he would approve the proposal to reject a possible left-wing government of Chegi, a single MP expressed concern.
In Livre’s view, if the Democratic Alliance and IL “joined the far right to overthrow a government supported by the left,” it would be a “betrayal of the voters’ intentions.”
Tavares stressed that “alliance politics is very important in any European country, since in general there is no absolute majority.”
On the left, Livret insists on the need for a written multilateral agreement.
“The very big difference the left has to offer over the right is that it offers neither uncertainty nor instability,” he says.
