Defense Minister Helena Carreiras rejects the idea that a possible change of government could affect Portugal’s candidacy for the UN Security Council, believing that goal will be maintained.
Asked by Lusa on Monday about the possibility of a government change that would prevent Portugal’s bid for a non-permanent Security Council seat in 2027-2028, Helena Carreiras replied: “No, I don’t think so.”
“There is great stability in the country and great political consensus regarding our international participation in missions and our presence in the United Nations. And in this sense, I believe that whoever the government is, it will continue to pursue the same goal – to win a seat in the Council and have a voice in this Council in such difficult and difficult times as the one in which we live,” defended the minister at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where she opened an exhibition dedicated to Portugal’s 65-year participation in the UN peacekeeping mission and operation.
