The inauguration of the new government of the Azores is scheduled for Monday

The new government of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), after the elections on February 4, will take office on Monday at 15:00 at the Regional Legislative Assembly in the city of Horta, a Lusa Parliamentary source confirmed on Tuesday.

The ceremony will mark the start of the new legislature following the appointment of Social Democrat José Manuel Bolheiro as president of the Azores executive following early regional elections planned due to this year’s poor budget.

The composition of the new regional government is still unknown, whose names will have to be considered by the representative of the Republic of the Azores, Pedro Catarino, and only after that they will be able to take office before parliament.

After taking office, the executive director of the SDS/CDS-PP/NPM coalition has 10 days to present his Program to the regional parliament – a document containing the main policy directions and measures that should be proposed to the legislative body.

According to the Political-Administrative Statute of the Azores, the discussion of the government program must take place no later than the 15th day after the assumption of office by the executive, and the discussion of the document “cannot exceed three days.”

Before the end of the debate, any parliamentary group can propose a rejection of the executive’s program.

Rejection of the document requires approval by the absolute majority of current deputies and implies the resignation of the government.

José Manuel Bolheiro said on election night that he would govern with a “relative majority” without forming government coalitions with any other political force, despite the fact that the coalition won 26 of the 57 regional deputies, three fewer than 29. it is necessary to obtain an absolute majority.

PS elected 23 deputies, Chegu – five, BE, IL and PAN – one each.

The February 4 elections took place after the rejection in November of proposals for this year’s plan and budget due to the abstention of Chegi and PAN and votes against PS, IL and BE, a situation that led the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to dissolve parliament and appoint early election.
