Livre spokesman Rui Tavares said on Tuesday that Ukraine “must be supported” to win its war with Russia and defended the creation of a European defense community that makes joint investments in this area.
Speaking to reporters in Braga regarding the French President’s statements about the possible future presence of ground forces in Ukraine, Rui Tavares said that the next European Commission should have a European Commissioner for Defense.
“All this together can save us from the specter of war in Europe, where young Europeans will be sent. This is what we want to avoid, and therefore Ukraine must be supported,” he repeated.
According to Rui Tavares, the European Union “is a good purchasing center”, with the ability to “buy cheaper in bulk for distribution across countries.”
“This is also very important in the defense industry,” he said.
According to him, helping Ukraine win “is a way to prevent Putin from leaving the European Union.”
“And so this is the best way for us not to have to face these very difficult and very painful issues in a future war on European soil that will require European armies,” he added.
Livre’s spokesman also said that helping Ukraine win this war is also an “act of solidarity” because the country “deserves respect for its territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
“And countries like Portugal, the middle and small countries of Europe know that if we do not unite to ensure that these values are respected, then the superpowers will do whatever they want with the territory and sovereignty of other countries,” he warned.
Following a meeting of European leaders in Paris on Monday, the French President did not rule out the future presence of ground forces in Ukraine.
“Today there is no consensus on sending troops into the field in an official, accepted and approved manner. But dynamically nothing should be ruled out,” said Emmanuel Macron.
