A 39-year-old woman was arrested this Monday in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará, in the northeast of the country, on charges of stealing a child from a “homeless woman” after losing her own child during childbirth. . The location of the stolen newborn was discovered using Amber Alerts, a technology tool that sends missing child alerts to thousands of people in the region.
The woman in custody, charged with the crimes of kidnapping and captivity of a vulnerable person, as a minor is legally defined, was pregnant several weeks earlier but lost the baby shortly after birth and was unable to deliver it, according to investigators. Returning home to the Sabiaguaba area where she was detained, the woman did not tell her about the death of the child and made up the idea that her son was born with some problems and that he needed to remain in the maternity ward for safety reasons until he was born . recovered.
Under this pretext, the woman began spending long hours a day away from home, presumably to be with her son in the hospital, but she was doing something else. Ricardo Pinheiro, director of the homicide and personal protection unit of the DHPP of the Judicial Police of Fortaleza, said that the suspect began frequenting places where drug addicts and homeless people are sheltered, in search of a woman who had just given birth to a child. she could imagine as her own.
On Saturday, February 24, the opportunity she was looking for came when a homeless young woman, who had given birth about two months earlier and whom she had approached with the ostensible intention of helping her, asked her to stay with her while her baby was born. she was running some errands. With the homeless child in her lap, the woman waited for the right moment and, without attracting attention, left the social pension, went home and introduced the newborn to her family as if it were the child she had lost.
However, the real mother of the baby, having discovered the disappearance of her son and the woman posing as her friend, contacted the police. In addition to initiating other measures, the Civil Police (Judicial) activated the Amber Alerts tool, the result of an agreement between the Brazilian government and Meta, owner of Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp, and through it published photographs of a newborn and a child. A robotic portrait of the suspect was sent to every cell phone within a 100-mile radius, and the two were quickly identified and turned over to police.
