Police have detained the man responsible for the green paint attack on Luis Montenegro and arrested four other activists involved in the plan, the PSP said in a statement on Wednesday.
The document explains that agents, while conducting “covert and visible security in the vicinity of the building,” discovered “a group of individuals with suspicious behavior and it turned out that they belonged to an environmental organization.” Of the five people, four were approached and officers took away a can of spray paint.
The perpetrator of the attack evaded the approach and ran towards the AD delegation, managed to hit the coalition leader with paint, but a few seconds after throwing the can, the security forces caught him and handcuffed him, detained him on the spot and took him to the police station.
After this episode, Prime Minister António Costa instructed the PSP to provide personal security to the leaders of parties with seats in parliament, if they wish. A source in the head of government’s office also said that Costa “has already spoken to Luis Montenegro, informing him about this.”
The attack was announced by the End Fossils movement minutes after it occurred, with climate activists declaring that “no party has the legitimacy to form a government if it continues to ignore the biggest crisis ever faced humanity faced.”
Other politicians have already come under similar attacks from activists, as was the case with Finance and Environment Ministers Fernando Medina and Duarte Cordeiro last year.
“Good idea”, small “effective” reviews“The idea is a good idea, which is climate and which we all share. […] This is a good call, it is a call of young people, but now I think that after a certain point it becomes a very ineffective way of acting,” said the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
