The PCP Secretary General today condemned the throwing of paint at PSD leader Luis Montenegro by a climate activist in Lisbon, expressing solidarity with him.
“An act of solidarity with Luis Montenegro in these circumstances. With their attitude, they are pushing people away from the noble cause that is protecting the environment. Ultimately, this alienates people rather than bringing them closer to the cause of protecting the environment. This attitude is incomprehensible, and I hope that this will not happen again. The responsibility for this will lie with the one who makes them,” said Paulo Raimundo.
Speaking to journalists during the CDU riots in Portimão, the communist leader did not specify whether he was afraid of becoming a victim of a similar act and repeated his criticism of these types of protests.
“People who end up taking this position, thinking that they are bringing the population and society as a whole closer to the cause they are advocating, have a counterproductive result: they are not bringing them closer to the cause they are advocating, they are driving people away.” from the cause they defend. The causes they defend. And the causes that they defend are much nobler than this or that attitude, which we, of course, must naturally condemn,” he emphasized.
Regarding Prime Minister António Costa’s proposal to provide personal security for PSP party leaders, Paulo Raimundo rejected the idea.
“We don’t need, we don’t have any need for these measures. We walk very comfortably on the streets, as you have seen. Therefore there is no difficulty in this. I think that the expressions of political disagreement that are sometimes expressed should remain in this sense. I really like this debate and this political confrontation, which was nothing less than this,” he concluded.
The young man doused Luis Montenegro with green paint, who was later picked up by a PSP agent.
End Fossil activists called for the action in a statement, arguing that “no party has a plan that matches climate reality.”
The student movement is calling for an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030 and demanding that we stop using gas to generate electricity by next year, using 100% renewable and free electricity instead.
However, Montenegro announced that it would today file a complaint against the activist who hit him with green paint at the entrance to the Lisbon Tourist Exchange (BTL), and thanked him for expressing solidarity.
