The Supreme Defense Council supported the proposed deployment of forces for 2024.

This Wednesday, the Supreme Council of National Defense unanimously welcomed proposals to adjust the number of deployed forces for 2024 and took stock of the support that Portugal has provided to Ukraine.

This information is contained in an information note published on the official website of the President of the Republic after the meeting of this collegial advisory body this Wednesday at its regular meeting at the Belém Palace in Lisbon.

The Supreme Council of National Defense, which met under the chairmanship of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, head of state and supreme commander of the Armed Forces, “unanimously gave a positive opinion on the proposals for the adjustment of individual national forces for 2024, as well as on the current situation regarding the support that Portugal provides to Ukraine” , the note says.

According to the Constitution, the Supreme Council of National Defense is a special collegial body chaired by the President of the Republic, advising on issues of national defense, as well as the organization, functioning and discipline of the Armed Forces.

This body includes the Prime Minister, the Ministers of State and National Defense, Foreign Affairs, Internal Administration, Finance and those responsible for the fields of industry, energy, transport and communications, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and the heads of the Navy, Army and Air Force.

The High Council of National Defense also includes representatives of the Republic and the Presidents of the Governments of the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira, the President of the National Defense Commission of the Assembly of the Republic and two other deputies elected to this body by a two-thirds majority.
